Make Up Magic in Peter Pan

Who saw the musical performance of Peter Pan at St. Robert School?  If you did, you probably noticed the wonderful makeup that was applied by Sally Zale, Bard Henderson, Jennie Fox, Margaret Collins, students Sophia Collins, Nina Draper, Lily Keane, graduate Francie Cook and parent Holly Gamblin.

The beautiful butterflies with shimmering wings, the fairy faces with bright spring colors such as teal and sea green with sparkles and the mermaids with their eloquent patterns.  The dazzling designs on the actors’ faces catch your eye and bring the characters together because most of us look at the face or head when we look at someone.

The makeup was not necessarily designed by any one person or group, although a Pinterest board was created to come up with makeup ideas.  Director Karl Miller wanted the actors and actresses to have fun and colorful designs on their faces as a part of their characters while also being identified to a group (i.e. Indians, Fairies, Mermaids) by their specific style.  Some designs like wings or scales came off internet pictures while others came from Pinterest.  These exquisite visions were put into reality by the makeup crew listed above.  It didn’t take hours or anything to apply the designs although, “The first time I did Anna’s makeup for Tinkerbell, it took me 20 minutes to design and execute it.  After we had the design perfected it only took about 10 minutes,” says Holly Gamblin, a big part of the makeup design and application group.

The entire makeup crew hopes the students has as much fun experimenting with the makeup designs.  It is very interesting to find out where the physical appearance of the fun characters you saw comes from.  You might consider paying more attention to things like makeup design the next time you see a musical, play, or dance.
