Book Review – Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio

Have you ever thought of what it would be like to walk into the hospital perfectly fine and wake up paralyzed from the neck down? Thats how Peg Kehret felt when she was in 7th grade of 1949 only twelve years old and not with one kind of polio but three.

Peg stayed at The Sheltering Arms recovery center but was immediately rushed University Hospital of Minneapolis. There she met Tommy and Dr. Bevis, and Mrs. Crab who had practically invented torture time.  Oh, and those hot packs are the worst! Once Peg is well enough to go back to Sheltering Arms she met her four roommates: Alice, Shirley, Dorothy, and Reneé. Peg was expecting everyone to have visitors on sunday,. Nobody had any company except for Peg and when her parents found this out they practically adopted all four of them and brought food and treats every week, but even though Peg had a sweet side, she also had a daring side. My favorite part is when Peg pops a wheelie on her way to the room

I recommend this book to anyone who loves biographies, autobiographies and  loves a life changing story. This is a good book for 5th grade and up.
