Bottle Flipping

Flip, Flip, Flip

“Did it land?” This question took the nation by storm this past year. Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, students of all ages became obsessed with flipping a water bottle, hoping for it to land straight up. The popular trend rose to fame when a high-schooler landed a bottle at a school talent show.  The craze became a favorite activity for kids and teens, but it was not necessarily a favorite for adults.

Many students recall their bottles being constantly taken away by teachers and parents. The repeated sounds of “Gurgle, Thud, and Crunch” drove most teachers crazy. Some schools even instituted rules against bottle flipping. Conor, a St. Robert student tells, “Often my bottles got taken away because I was flipping too much.” Many teachers threw the bottles away, or even made kids  water the plants with their confiscated  bottle.

Students, however, enjoyed the popular antic. Many students got creative with the trend, sometimes trying to flip the bottle in attempt to land on its cap, or they would try to land it onto surfaces high in the air. Students say flipping is very fun and addicting because many people will continue to flip the bottle until they succeed. Michael, a 7th Grader at St. Robert, said, “Bottle flipping is fun and soothing for students. It can also become addicting.” Flipping is a way for friends to connect and bond over ways to flip the bottle. Students would often gather in a circle and challenge one another in a game to see who can land the bottle first.  Sam, a St. Robert 8th grader explains, “Bottle flipping is soothing for the mind and is also fun.”

In conclusion, bottle flipping can be fun for most kids, but it can appear a nuisance for teachers. Remember, don’t be scared to let those bottles fly!
