Russia Invading Ukraine

Emmerson L, Columnist

In eastern Europe, Ukraine is being invaded by Russia. Families, houses, and the state itself are being brutally damaged. Ukrainians are fleeing from their homes and families, trying to stay safe from the terrible attacks from Russia.

The first attacks from Russia started on February 24th, 2022. In the past six weeks, since the first attack, hospitals, Kharkiv’s freedom square, and opera houses have been bombed by Russia. The attacks from Russia have hit apartments and many other buildings. Russia has hit the cites Kharkiv and Kyiv. Due to these attacks, families have been huddled in subway stations trying to stay safe.

Due to these attacks, many people have died. A seven-year-old boy arrived at Ohmatdyt children’s hospital, in Kyiv, on the second day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He was riding in the car with both his parents and two sisters. Shells started to explode around them, sending shrapnel ripping through glass and metal, then flesh. His parents and one sister died on the spot; while his other sister was taken to a different hospital. An ambulance brought the boy, unconscious and losing blood, to Ohmatdyt, where doctors performed emergency surgery and put him on a ventilator.

More than10 million people are already thought to have fled their homes in Ukraine because of the invasion, according to the United Nations.” Almost two million people have fled to Poland while many others have gone to Romania (662,751), Hungary (404,021), Moldova (401,704), Russia (350,632), Slovakia (304,983), and Belarus (18,060). To get to these places the citizens have been taking trains, even though the trains have been over-packed with people, carrying more than they ever intended to transport. Other countries have been giving Ukrainians medical care, food, blankets, social welfare, and access to housing.

In conclusion, all people should put effort towards helping Ukraine, and the people of Ukraine. A way people could help would be to donate to organizations, and to spread the word to others to donate as well.
