The world has to keep their water clean in order to drink, but there won’t be a lifetime supply of water. Water is reused to serve a variety of purposes in most places in order to not “run” out of water. The Jones Island Facility helps Milwaukee County keep their water clean for residents to drink and use water safely in their daily lives. The Jones Island Water Facility has many important aspects that keep the water facility running smoothly. Without this water facility, the area would not have the needed water to sustain the population. 

The Jones Island Water Facility’s main purpose is to make sewage water into drinkable water. To do this, the treatment facility leads the water through many different steps. One article written about Jones Island by Atlas Obscura reports  that the first step of cleaning the water is to sort through “large pieces of garbage (like towels and gravel) [which] are cleaned out of the water.” Then, the water is treated and sanitized; they have to disinfect the sewage with organisms that eat the bacteria that may be growing. 

The water treatment facility also is great in helping the environment. The entire facility uses renewable energy while changing the sewage water into drinkable water. This system doesn’t negatively impact the earth at all, but instead helps the county to maintain a healthy environment. The organization ‘Veolia’ (the brand that’s connected to MMSD) has many goals in making the earth greener by serving the people clean water.

In order to keep water clean, Jones Island uses a specific brand called Milorganite. During the wastewater process, this fertilizer removes chunks from the sewage. Milorganite has many different nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and much more. These are very important because they clean out the water to allow citizens to drink water that is not“bacteria infested.” 

In conclusion, having this water facility is key in cities in order to keep people healthy and safe. The Jones Island has many different steps in cleaning their water such as taking out the trash and making it safe to drink with their brand milorganite.
