Over 800 people were left stranded on September 6, 2023 in Thessaly, Greece. Thessaly suffered greatly following severe flooding that left serious damage. There were strong rainfalls for days that eventually led up to the catastrophic event.
Around 16 people passed away; some of these casualties came from surrounding countries also impacted by the flood like Bulgaria and Turkey. Six of these deaths were located in Greece. This was the biggest flood the region has experienced in recent history. Some villagers went missing after this tragic event; it is not known if they passed or simply remained lost.
The city of Volos was damaged the most. The flood waters were recorded to be at least 2 meters deep. Many roads and the majority of the environment were all destroyedOver 885 people were rescued over a two day course following the tragic event. People state that it would be nearly impossible to evacuate so many people and due to the circumstances of the weather. There were so many staff from the rescue team trying to save all these innocent lives.
The government has spoken and said that over 5,000 calls went through to the emergency department. Authorities released divers and professional rescuers to search for people who are in need of help. The authorities also wanted to send more help with helicopters but that also was a challenge due to the severe thunderstorms. Also, buildings collapsed, including the radio station, which inhibited people’s ability to get alerts. This very troubling situation caused so much stress to Greece’s citizens. Restorations in these damages will cost a lot for the small country.
