The Olympics are a very important event that is happening in just a few months. They will be hosted in Paris, France. Whether a person is interested in the Olympic athletes, the countries participating, or the ceremonies that are happening, there is something for everyone to watch and enjoy.

According to the Olympic website, one critical part of the Olympic traditions involves a torch. The Olympic torch is a torch that has come to every city where the Olympics have been held and some even more exotic places like the moon, scuba diving into the depths of the ocean, and even to see the great pyramids of Egypt. This torch has been held by some of the most famous people in the world – musicians, athletes, astronauts, presidents, and members of the royal family. Recently, this torch was held by a French rapper, Jul while being delivered to Marseille–the second largest city in France–for the Olympics. The torch will make its way around France even reaching some of the more remote islands off the French mainland. In the end the torch will find its way to Paris. However, while the torch was in Bordeaux, a man was detained for suspicious activity that indicated he was planning a terrorist attack on the torch and the people that were carrying it. Luckily, his attempts were unsuccessful.

Another interesting aspect of the Olympics is, of course, the sports. This year the summer Olympics has a new sport: breaking. Most people know this sport as break dancing. This sport consists of 16 people competing in each category, which are separated by gender. An interesting aspect of the sport is that the whole thing is improvisational. After each competitor performs, the judges vote and a winner is selected. Although this sport is only being added to the Olympics now, the sport has been popular in New York since the 1990s.

When considering all of the sports included in the summer Olympics, the athletes this year include a large range of ages, with the oldest athlete being 61 years old and the youngest being 17. The youngest will be competing in artistic swimming and the oldest in equestrian. Equestrian is like a dog show where the dogs are tested or just their ability to take obstacles, but rather than walking beside their horse they are riding it. The most respected athletes are the ones from America and China who are generally expected to win the most medals. The olympics this year are meant to be well celebrated and high quality these olympic games are likely to create many opportunities for young athletes. Whether the torch is being passed or an athlete is passing the finish line the olympics will be well followed and celebrated.
