This November, Americans 18 and older will probably go out and vote for the 47th president of the United States. While the political system does include a variety of different parties, two main parties have historically controlled the American political system, leaving voters with two viable candidates: current vice president, Kamala Harris, and former president, Donald Trump.
Donald Trump, born on June 14th, 1946 in New York City, New York, had a single term as president of the United States, ranging from 2017 to 2021. After losing his initial race for re-election, he decided to run again for president in the 2024 election. However, since he last ran for office, things have changed in the country. Instead of announcing his former vice president, Mike Pence, as his running mate, he has instead chosen to run alongside army veteran and Ohio senator, J.D. Vance. He was originally running against current president Joe Biden, but following Biden’s announcement of dropping out of the race Trump is running against Kamala Harris.
Kamala Harris, born on October 20th, 1964, in Oakland, California, is the Democratic nominee for president of the United States. In 2020, she ran with Joe Biden, and became the first, female vice president. In 2024, she announced her plans to run for president after Biden dropped out. For her running mate, she has chosen governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz. If she is elected, she will become the first female president of the United States.
While no one source can inform voters how to make the best choice in critical elections like this one, people are urged to do their research, reflect on their personal beliefs, and find ways to promote what they believe will secure America’s good and future. That being said, Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church, has publicly decried both candidates. He has told people to, “pick the lesser of the evils”, which means that Catholic voters should pick whoever they decide will do the least amount of harm to the world.
