St. Robert has a student-written and managed newspaper called the White & Blue Press. The White and Blue Press allows members of the 7th and 8th grade, who bring their talents to the writing, advertisement designs, and photography that is shared by the paper. The White and Blue Press publishes at least five issues each school year. There are some staff members who are dedicated columnists while the media team members rotate between supplying the media to support the articles and contributing to the writing.
7th grader and staff member, Sadie says, “My favorite thing about The White and Blue Press is getting to write.” Students on the staff often love writing or taking photographs for The White and Blue Press, but there are some challenges as well. Sadie mentions, “The worst part about The White and Blue Press is the homework.” Sadie shows that even when things seem the best and she enjoys the activity, there are some drawbacks. This also relates to life when even the best and funnest things aren’t always perfect.
Sadie writes for a column focused specifically on Religion. Sadie said, “My favorite thing about my category is I express faith to people that don’t know about Catechism, and my least favorite thing is that I can’t change my category.” Students get assigned to a category in The White and Blue Press. Just as employees of other newspapers are expected to write stories to fit a specific column or topic, the students or staff here have to do the same even if students don’t like their category. However, students do get some input in their assigned columns. Some students included in The White and Blue Press start out not liking their category, but turn out to love their category in the end.
Moreover, 7th grader Aubree says, “My favorite thing about being a full time writer for The White and Blue Press is that I get to interview people about questions that I never thought I would ask them, and my least favorite thing is that I’m shy, so I don’t really like interviewing people.” The White and Blue Press helps students come out of their shells and socialize with the school. This is good for students to do, especially for shy students. Aubree also claims, “I do The White and Blue Press because it’s fun and I get to write about things I like to do.” This also shows that students that participate in The White and Blue Press get to write about things they enjoy. Some students are also signed up for The White and Blue Press due to insistence from their parents, but they are glad that they were forced because they have such an awesome experience in the end. These two 7th graders and many more love and enjoy participating in The White and Blue Press, and they would encourage others to join in 7th and 8th grade. It is truly a wonderful experience working for the school news and telling fascinating facts and stories about every category.
