St. Robert School and Parish has a long history full of struggles solved by the loving community that surrounds this life-changing school. The parish has been changed many times, for it started off as a small wooden structure built in a day and morphed into the huge, breath-taking structure visited by many from all over Milwaukee.
St. Robert Parish started off as a quaint building built fully of wood in 1912. The church was built in under a day and fit the small community of people nearby. At that time, much of what surrounded the church was farmland. Three months later, a new, more permanent church was built across the street from the disposable wooden structure. This church was much bigger, making room for the expanding community surrounding this place of worship. This new church also came with a school, located on the second floor.
Eventually, St. Robert School and Parish planned to expand the church and move it to a different space, allowing the school to grow into the first floor too, but there was one problem: it cost a lot to do that. The parish reached out to the community around them, asking for funding but no funding was presented. The funding search started in the mid 1920’s during the Great Depression, so the parish decided to hold back on their ideas of expansion and renovation for the 1,000 students it served. However, in 1936, funding was growing so they were able to start renovations. The new parish was finished in 1937, a year after construction started and still stands today. The first ever use of the new church was conducted on Christmas morning of 1937.
The school was able to expand and filled the lower level – the former church space – full of children. The school has since then prospered and is still very involved with the community surrounding it. The space expanded again in the late 1900’s. The school draws families in from all different types of backgrounds and religions, creating a feeling of home for all. St. Robert School and Parish started off as a church built in a day and has since then grown a lot. St. Robert continues to grow and serves the community surrounding this life changing palace.
