The Terrible Results of Hurricane Ida

Emme L, Columnist

Hurricane Ida, the terrible hurricane. Hurricane Ida left many families in distress resulting, damage, or family loss. Ida had winds at around 150 miles per hour, heavy rainfall, tornadoes, and flash floods. A hurricane is a closed, low level atmospheric circulation that includes strong winds and rain. Hurricane Ida came around Port Fourchon, Louisiana at 11:55 am on August 29, 2021.

In New Orleans, damage from Hurricane Ida was quite devastating. Several buildings were damaged and flooding caused even more damage throughout the city. However, in southwest Louisiana outside of New Orleans, hardly any damage was done. There was a bad storm and a significant amount of flooding. ‘Significant flooding was reported late Sunday night in LaPlace.’

Once Hurricane Ida hit, the storm affected a grand total of seventeen areas. In Louisiana, a power outage began and extended to Mississippi, leaving 71,894 people in the dark immediately. After at least three weeks, Louisiana received their power back, but not before even more outages occurred. In both states, there were over 1,082,955 people who had lost power due to the storm. In St. Charles Parish, Louisiana even the emergency phone lines were down due to the hurricane.

Over in Laplace, Louisiana many people were trapped in flood waters. Around six to twelve inches of rain had fallen from Ida, and those who lived in the lowest parts of town, saw the inches increase as the town’s water rushed their way. Hurricane Ida caused tons of destruction resulting in at least 95 billion dollars worth of damage. Ida had winds at around 150 miles per hour, heavy rainfall, tornadoes, and flash floods.

In conclusion, the states that received damage are striving to fix the billions of dollars worth of damage. Hopefully, soon the affected states can fix the damage that was left by this terrible hurricane. As of Louisiana, people are being told to stay away from the state until some damages are fixed. Louisiana’s governor tells evacuees not to return until damage has been fixed.
