I’m Elizabeth Boyle from the 8th grade class. I recently was elected into the Student Leadership Council (SLC) as an 8th grade class representative. This year the student council consists of 27 middle schoolers. On Friday October 4th the Student Leadership Council had induction ceremony at Mass. Shortly after Mass, the Student Leadership Council participated in a retreat. Throughout the retreat we all participated in many activities such as team building games and we brainstormed for projects we want to do throughout the 2013- 2014 school year.

The SLC decided some of our first activities we plan on doing this school year. We focused on four main topics for the student leadership council which include: Ambassador, School Spirit, Fundraisers, and Service. Each Wednesday at recess the student council meets. During the meetings we plan to focus on brainstorming ideas for a certain activity.

To start off, for school fundraising, we will have a costume day on Halloween. We will charge $2.00 for someone to have the opportunity to wear a costume. Also, some more fundraising ideas include holiday grams. During the Holidays students could write a nice note to people who are going through a rough time. Due to the sugar free environment we think smoothie stands or muffin sales would be a great way to raise money for our school to donate to charities. Another idea may include a cereal drive. Everyone could bring in one box of cereal and once we have enough cereal boxes we could make a big chain of cereal boxes and let them all fall down, like dominoes.

To show some school spirit we thought of making up a new school song. The SLC also wants to find a way to clean the Bobcat Mascot suit so it can be worn to show St. Robert pride at events. Some other plans for this year include the little kids in kindergarten going on a field trip with the older, middle school kids. Some field trip ideas include the pumpkin patch, the library, and the park or the beach.

One of the Student Leadership Council’s main goal is to include service in our mission. Last year the students did the sandwich drive. This year we decided to continue to help fill many hungry stomachs. Last year, the SLC couldn’t make all those sandwiches on our own so, we asked the students to help. During the retreat on Friday we had an idea of visiting kids in the hospital during the holidays. This way we can spread holiday cheer.

The Student Leadership Council is here to represent the students and we couldn’t do any of these things without you.  We, the students are an important part of the St Robert community. Working together along with teachers, our parents and other members of our community, we can accomplish great things in our school and in the world around us. Let’s have a great year and make a difference!
