Recently, a brazen robbery in plain daylight took place in one of the most reputable museums in the world. While only eight jewels were stolen, they were incredibly valuable like everything in the Louvre. This robbery has surprised the Louvre and the world alike. Who could be responsible for such a heinous crime?
The jewels that were stolen have a combined worth of 102 million dollars. Alongside the massive price tag, these jewels also had a lot of cultural significance. The tiara of Empress Eugénie was one thing that was stolen; she was the wife of Napoleon the III. The tiara held almost three thousands diamonds and two hundred pearls. The robbers also tried to steal Empress Eugénie’s crown, but they accidentally dropped it. Sadly, it was damaged and may not be able to be restored to its original state. In total, these thieves stole around eight thousand diamonds and many other precious stones, such as sapphires and emeralds.
While some of those involved have been identified and apprehended, at least one thief is still on the run. The authorities believe there are four individuals directly involved in the theft, but only three had been caught as of November 13. It is believed that these robbers are not organized, professional robbers, but just minor criminals. These criminals had quite a simple plan: two people broke in, distracted the guards, and stole the jewels while the other two waited outside on scooters for a quick getaway. Right now it is believed that retrieving the jewels is going to be impossible. The robbers will most likely take the jewels apart and sell the individual metals and gems.
The fake news spreading across social media has been misinforming millions of people about this robbery. For example, someone deemed “fedora man” to be the detective of the investigation, but he turned out to be a teenager who was fond of Sherlock Holmes’ sense of fashion. Another piece of fake news is that the Russians were involved in the robbery. Some individuals claimed to have seen Russian passports on the scene, and others claimed they saw the jewels being sold on a digital Russian marketplace. Both of these Russian rumors were proved false by Paris officials. Many other false theories and rumors are all over the internet.
While it might be too late to save the jewels, this robbery gave the Louvre an opportunity and a reason to fix their security. It had been a very long time since they had updated the security system. This robbery really shocked the Louvre workers because the last time they were robbed was in 1911. They spent 92 million dollars on building a new security system. Maybe now the Louvre will be safe.
