Recently a flood in southeast Asia has affected millions of people. In total more than 1,500 people died due to the floods, and while millions survived, they still suffered the effects of the flood. This flood has affected much of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand in addition to many other countries.
This massive flood was caused by a combination of a few things. First of all, two big contributors were a typhoon and two cyclones. These weather events also caused smaller disasters, like landslides. Alongside the landslides, all of the countries affected were flooded by waters. The flood completely submerged the countries. When water levels finally started falling, the true destruction caused by the flood was revealed. Buildings were completely destroyed and towns were left in ruins.
An anomaly called La Niña heavily helped the formation of the cyclones and the typhoon. La Niña is a climate pattern in which the Equatorial Pacific is a lot colder. This causes stronger winds and those stronger winds sometimes also cause disasters like those experienced recently. La Niña also causes increased rainfall, which can lead to floods. Al Jazeera, a news station, also mentions how climate change also played a factor in this disaster. In addition to climate change, many sources state that deforestation and other illegal methods of extracting natural resources have weakened the land’s natural defence to disasters like these.
Millions of people are struggling because of this disaster, entire cities have been leveled such as Angoda, Bangkok, and Tukka, and everything is covered with mud and waste. Many people are also suffering from a lack of food and drinkable water. The flood has cut people off from electricity and any access to communicate with the outside world.
This flood has affected millions. Rescue plans and other ways to help the people affected have been put out but many people are still to be accessed. The rescue plans are also being slowed because the dangers of the flood are still present. One organization that is helping these affected countries World Meteorological Organization. Alongside the people the land also needs help. Illegal logging, which is the illegal extraction of wood from forests, has weakened the land’s tolerance to floods. If restoration efforts are not put out even more people could die because of catastrophes. All possible efforts should be put out to try to recover from the catastrophic deluge.
