Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters Movie Review

The movie I’m reviewing is Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters.

My rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

The movie was really well done. Annabeth actually had blonde hair in this one like she’s supposed to, according to the book. But on Circe’s island, it’s just a run down amusement park, unlike in the book where it is a tropical island filled with man-eating sheep.  Percy doesn’t get turned into a hamster, and they don’t meet Blackbeard who’s supposedly a son of Ares.  I also thought that Tyson was a disappointment. He doesn’t talk at all like he is described as in the books. He actually sounds smart, whereas in the book he is portrayed as naive! The Mist is also really different. The Mist usually works so that the mortals can’t see through it, but Tyson needed this perfume-like magical spray to make to make him look normal.

Now the parts I liked: I thought the action was really well done.  Plus, they actually had Dionysus, the director of Camp Half Blood, in this one. I thought he was pretty funny.  I was honestly surprised by how well done the special effect guys had made the cyclops look (not Tyson, but the evil one, Polyphemus). That fight against Polyphemus was pretty intense.  Also, when they were on the Princess Andromeda they had some pretty action scenes.

What I like most about this movie is that they had all the same cast returning and they all looked the same as in the first movie.  When will they introduce the council of the cloven elders? I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure Grover gets his searchers license, a document all satyrs strive for. Overall, I thought they got the whole adventure down pretty good.  Although, they didn’t have the sirens, monster-like creatures that sing the desire of whoever is listening. That may sound cool, but whenever you hear them it enchants you and makes you go towards them, where they then kill you. That may sound gruesome, but I can see why they didn’t put that in the movie.

All in all, it was a pretty awesome movie.
